Modified
Bitumen
is a roofing membrane consisting of asphalt and plastic
or rubber polymers, and is therefore widely considered
an evolution of asphalt built up roofing. Modified bitumen
displays the built in redundancy of asphalt built up, as
well as the UV resistance and flexibility of a modified
membrane. This is because the polymer mix used allows the
asphalt to take on its most beneficial qualities. Like
with tar and gravel roofing, modified bitumen requires
a surfacing material, and the most commonly used are factory
applied mineral blends, and gravel. A typical life span
of modified bitumen is 10 to 20 years, depending on climate
and weathering. Modified bitumen is generally applied using
a heat application process that melts the seams together
to create a seal, yet sometimes a cold adhesive application
system is used.
Roll
roofing
is composition sheet roofing that is manufactured in rolls,
and laid on a roof in overlapping strips. Roll roofing
materials can be applied as most forms of sheathing, including
underlayment and shingling, due to its availability in
a wide range of materials. Some roll roofing materials
include asphalt, asphalt saturated organic felt (which
can be standard or specification felt), SBS modified, re-enforced
fiber-glass, granulated roll roofing, and more. Often materials
are mixed in order to enhance roll roofing performance
and durability qualities. Some of these considerations
comprise flexibility, water absorption, tear resistance,
adhesion, thermal stability, and slip resistance. Asphalt
roll roofing is the most commonly used roll roofing material,
yet is suitable to steep roofing applications. Fiberglass
roll roofing is appropriate for low sloped roll roofing
applications, while modified bitumen is used on almost
all roofing types.

Tar
and Gravel Roofing Composition is a very popular feature
of contemporary homes and commercial buildings is the
low slope roof (2:12). Because many roofing materials
such as shingles are unsuited to such low slopes, tar
and gravel roofing is a common original material used.
Also known as ?built-up roofs?, tar and gravel roofing
consist of layers of asphalt and tar paper that are fastened
to the roof surface with molten asphalt applications. The
layers are laminated and then covered with gravel to hold
them down and protect against UV degradation. Some of this
gravel becomes embedded in the hot asphalt, and some remains
loose on the roof surface floor. The life expectancy of
tar and gravel roofs is approximately 10-20 years.
Although
tar and gravel roofs are durable, it is easy for leaks
to develop. This is because tar and gravel roofing
is especially sensitive to penetrations, and must be
able to move around during climate change in a manner
similar to membrane roofing. Usually, leaks occur around
flashings, chimneys, eaves, or additional roof planes.
Sometimes, wind blows away enough gravel to expose
the surface to sun and cold, which can also lead to
leaks. Older roofs experience blistering in the asphalt,
and simple leak remedies usually indicate the need
for tar and gravel roofing replacement. The problem
is that tar and gravel roofing do not handle multiple
layers very well, and walking on a tar and gravel roof
for maintenance purposes harms it further.
