Clay tiles give your home an impressive looking roof in addition to providing great protection, a long lifespan, and a variety of styles to choose from. Tile roofs can handle the toughest elements thrown at a roof, offering good protection against wind, hail, and rain.

Since clay tile is fireproof, it can also reduce your homeowner's insurance. Clay tile lasts a minimum of 40 to 50 years and could last up to a full century! You can expect a warranty of at least 50 years from clay tile manufacturers. While clay tile has a number of advantages it has two specific drawbacks; weight and cost.

A clay tile roof is one of the most expensive roofing options. Clay tiles are more expensive than many other products, but they are also more labor intensive making installation more expensive. However, when you consider the tile's longevity, the expense it easily justified.

Installation should be handled by a roofer with clay tile experience in order to get the maximum durability and life span from the product. Given the expense of the product, you will want to repair the roof rather than replace it when ever possible. Be sure to use a qualified clay tile roofer as repair work performed by an inexperienced roofer could cause additional damage to the roof.

Clay tiles come in a variety of textures, colors, and styles. The most common style of clay tiles are 'S' tiles, also known as Spanish, Barrel, or Mission tiles. Another popular style is flat tile, also known as shingle tile. The variety of colors used in clay tile roofing can range from single color, to multi colored roofing arranged in a pattern or in random fashion.

Pros:
Long life
Long warranty
Strong material
Available in a variety of shapes and colors
Environmentally Friendly

Cons:
Material and installation expense
A heavy material not suitable for all roofs

Roof Shingles - Asphalt (Composition)
Asphalt shingles have been around more than 100 years and are the most common roof covering material used in the United States.

In fact, around 75% of residential homes are covered in asphalt shingles in the U.S.

Asphalt Shingle Roof
Asphalt shingles are cheaper than most other alternative roofing materials and are readily available in a variety of sizes, styles and colors. Recycled material asphalt shingles can even be purchased if you would like to make your home more environmentally friendly.

Asphalt shingles are durable, yet easy to repair. When finding a loose or missing shingle, simply bend up the shingle above it. Then remove the nails holding the loose or damaged shingle, and slide the scraps out. Slide and nail the new shingle in, then glue the raised shingles back down.

Although asphalt shingles have a shorter lifespan than alternative, more expensive materials their lower cost makes them attractive. They typically last 20 to 40 years and usually offer a 20, 25, 30, 35 or 40 year factory warranty depending upon the specific product purchased. Keep in mind that the manufacturer's warranty may require that the roof is installed by a licensed and/or certified roofer as the most common problems and maintenance issues occur when the installation did not include adequate ventilation and/or flashing.

Asphalt shingles can be layed over the top of an existing shingle roof if the initial roof is a single layer and in good condition. An 'overlay' roof will typically not last as long as a completely new roof.

The more commonly used fiberglass based shingles are lighter, more flexible and cheaper. They are less resistant to tearing than organic felt, so precaution is needed during installation. Once installed, fiberglass mat shingles are just as durable as organic felt shingles. While clawing, curling, and fish mouthing can occur on fiberglass based shingles, it is less likely.

Pros: Durable, easy to repair, easily available, variety of sizes styles and colors, material expense, works on most roof types and pitches

Cons: Shorter life expectancy
